  18. <p>     Last September President Bush vowed to enlist the armed
  19. forces in preventing illegal drugs from being smuggled into the
  20. U.S. Recently, he approved plans to station a naval task force
  21. off the Caribbean coast of Colombia to monitor sea and air
  22. traffic. The task force might consist of an aircraft carrier,
  23. up to eight support vessels, and E-2C Hawkeye aircraft equipped
  24. with sophisticated radar that can track hundreds of planes at
  25. a time. Rather than shoot down suspected smugglers, the force
  26. would observe planes flying in or out of Colombia and notify
  27. Colombian authorities or the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs
  28. Service of the smugglers' whereabouts. If Colombia agrees to
  29. cooperate, the task force could begin operations within months.
